The Digital Tsunami: Resisting the Hysteria

Today's parents are inundated with alarming headlines warning against the dangers of "screen-time," yet at the same time their kids are growing up in a world where tech is ubiquitous, to say the least. Ricky Ben Or, the founder of the Jerusalem Sudbury School, explores the challenge of screen usage (computers, tablets, and smartphones) among our children. He traces the history of the computer, the emergence of the smartphone as the prevalent digital device and our response to this in Sudbury schools and other SDE environments as well as in families. Ricky has been interested in alternative education since high school and always aspired to work in the field. He is a founder of the Jerusalem Sudbury School, which opened its doors in 2002, and is currently one of the largest Sudbury communities in the world. Ricky was very active in the nonprofit of the school and joined the staff in 2007. Ricky lives in Jerusalem and recently retired from the Jerusalem Sudbury School staff, after ten years. He is a father to five children, three of who were educated at the Jerusalem Sudbury School. He spends his time babysitting his granddaughter while pursuing a writing and speaking career. This is a free talk, but please register on Eventbrite. Kids are welcome, but childcare is not provided. For more info or questions, please email info@houstonsudburyschool.org.
